What Is the FingerMath Method? How to Guide Your Child to Learn FingerMath at Home

I. What Is FingerMath?

FingerMath is a method that trains children’s mathematical thinking and skill development through their own hands — specifically, by manipulating their fingers (Finger = finger, Math = mathematics).

This method uses fingers to represent numbers and calculations, helping children produce accurate answers quickly without needing to write them down.

1. Where Did FingerMath Originate?

FingerMath originated in Korea, but has since become increasingly popular in Japan, the United States, Australia, and Vietnam, among others.

2. What Age Is Suitable for FingerMath?

The ages 4–8 are when children begin shifting from action-based thinking to visual thinking, and start learning basic operations like addition and subtraction.
This is also the ideal period to help children develop focus, memory, reflexes, and confidence, while building interest in numbers.

FingerMath is recommended for children aged 4–8, helping them practice math thinking through finger movements. Children can perform calculations using just their hands — no memorization of long formulas or external tools required.

II. Benefits of Learning the FingerMath Method

  • Improved Focus: Concentration is the foundation of every child’s development. FingerMath trains focus by having children calculate long number sequences in a short time. With regular practice, this becomes a lasting habit that strengthens attention skills.

  • Flexible Thinking: Visualizing numbers as finger movements encourages flexibility and sharpness in problem-solving.

  • Balanced Brain Development: FingerMath develops both logical (left-brain) and visual (right-brain) thinking — building a foundation for overall brain growth.

  • A Love for Math: Math becomes fun and visual instead of abstract and dry, helping children enjoy learning.

III. How to Teach Your Child FingerMath at Home

Below are useful steps to help parents easily guide their children at home, enabling them to understand the logic of calculations and develop thinking naturally.

1. Getting Familiar with FingerMath

Unlike traditional paper-and-pencil math, FingerMath allows children to “see – feel – calculate” using ten fingers to represent numbers.

  • The right hand represents units (0–9)

  • The left hand represents tens (10–90)

Example: The number 34 is shown by the little finger on the right hand (4) and the ring finger on the left hand (30).

From there, children learn to count from 0–99 using both hands. After mastering counting, they can begin practicing basic addition and subtraction within this range.

2. Basic Rules Parents Should Know

Right Hand – Units

Each finger on the right hand represents one unit (1–9).

1

Left Hand – Tens

Each finger on the left hand represents a multiple of ten (10–90).

2

Addition Rules in FingerMath

When performing addition:

  • Units: Count from right to left using the right hand. Each time you add one, lift one more finger from right to left.

  • Tens: Count from left to right using the left hand for tens values.

  • Special case: When adding 5 (thumb on right hand) or 50 (thumb on left hand), simply lift the thumb — no need to change other fingers.

Subtraction Rules in FingerMath

When performing subtraction:

  • Units: Count from left to right (opposite of addition). Each time you subtract one, fold down one finger on the right hand.

  • Tens: Subtract from right to left using the left hand.

  • Special case: For 5 or 50, fold down the thumb only.

Note: When all right-hand fingers are folded but subtraction continues, open all right-hand fingers again (representing returning to 9) and fold one finger on the left hand to show subtracting 10.

IV. Why Should Children Learn FingerMath at KiddiMath Skill Development Center?
